What was the situation with crime during that period?

Right before and around December 2001 it did become a lot less secure (many "secuestros relámpagos", or blitz kidnappings etc). This is also the time when many people with money started moving to gated communities. So it was definitely a low point in that sense; it did become a lot better quickly.

It is so strange that nowadays on paper the economy is actually worse off than in 2001, but the safety issues are a lot less prevalent. The whole kidnapping thing is non-existent today, and most robberies etc occur on the periphery of the city in working class neighborhoods. It is in the news a lot and there is definitely been an uptick, but when you compare it to other Latam countries, safety is really a non-issue in Argentina overall (compared to Brazil or Colombia, for example).

Out of interest, why did you move to Argentina rather than elsewhere? And what made you leave Europe?

Was a combination of circumstances, I already spoke Spanish and loved Latin America, and had a lot of Argentine friends back in Europe. After visiting Argentina and Brazil in 2003 I first moved to Brazil for a few months and after that moved to Argentina; love both countries. I left Europe just because I didn't feel the same energy in Europe (Europe seems stale, like a museum, and everything is already "done", in Latam there is so much energy and a lot of things still have to be built)

Ive heard that before that Europe is realy such a low growth place! And I'm sure the weather makes a difference too=)

How much income from WiFi do you need to feel comfortable in Arg? I see such wide ranging numbers and I guess there's a wide gap between rich and poor there too.

Yeah that's definitely the case in Europe - for Arg I would say 2k+, anything above 3k is living very comfortably in Argentina. Of course wealth gap is super high here, if you make over 2.5k you're already part of the 1%
