Langsdorff was born in the same hospital like me in Bergen auf Regen, Germany's largest island in the Baltic Sea.
Pretty fascinating story and I think Langsdorff is a good example that not all Germans at this terrible times were on the dark side. With his actions, he probably saved the lifes of hundreds of German and British sailors.
Very well researched article as well, I learned a few new details. 👍🏻
Thanks for several details I didn't know. We have refought the battle in miniature 7 times most within a short jog of the Río de la Plata. Using 1:3000 scale lead ships and a wargame ruleset, General Quarters 3. Took a GS tour in MVD led by the wife of the protege of the WWII British ambassador. Have you been to the UY naval museum & learned about the involvement if its WWI era ship Uruguay?
Thank you sir! Have you been to the German cemetery? It’s next to the British one and both of those have a separate entrance almost at the back of the main entrance (on Avenida Elcano 4530). You can’t get to those graves from the main entrance.

Wow that is crazy about the same hospital! Thanks and yes I agree, there are always multiple layers to most stories and this was one of those examples

That is awesome! No, I haven't been to the museum yet but it is definitely on my list for next time!
A very enjoyable read. I visited the German cemetery in Chacarita but didn’t come across his grave, must have missed it.
My old man loves to talk about this story, something about his generation and this WW2 story as I’ve heard a few times now.

Yep! I went to both the British and German. I was so confused how to get into them initially because of that reason.
Quite the experience!
Amazing story; I love WWII history and all of that was new to me.
Yeah it surprised me that those ships came all the way down here! Amazing distances
