Very interesting. I knew about the Mercosur, but not the details of its history and the delicate details of its inner workings. Thanks for sharing this.

So is the Argentina passport the easiest to get ? You’re supposed to be able to ask for it after 2 years of residence right ?

Yes that’s right, in practice it does take a bit longer but from two years onwards you can start the citizenship process

Brazil citizenship is easier to get if you're a couple and give birth there. The parents are automatically entitled to PR and can apply for passport/citizenship after 1 year. I'm surprised you haven't talked about this route.

To add, Brazilian bureaucracy is a lot easier to deal with compared to Argentina for foreigners. You might not know but there's a 150+ page thread on Nairaland that's entirely about this route. Easier to DIY compared to Argentina, in my opinion.

I was talking about Mercosur in general, and without having a child (not everyone will be into birth tourism), Argentina is the fastest citizenship in the bloc next to Peru, but Argentina’s passport is better. Also with the route Brazil is taking rn I would not recommend it, however much I love Brazil for holidays (and it’s where I started in Latam). Also prefer the freedom of cash transactions and shadow economy in Argentina vs Brazil’s love for pix and leaving your CPF for every micro transaction. Sometimes more “efficient” is the opposite of desirable, which is the case here imo.
