It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Lots of ways to play it. I think another big Amnesty is in the cards to get locals with HUGE amounts of assets abroad. Almost all of my wealthy Porteño friends all are hiding tons of cash abroad in the USA and Europe accounts. Milei could do a sweep with the IRS to find all of these people and threaten them with harsh penalties if they don't bring it back.
I think just the threat of that would help bring in a TON!
I think the threat will not do anything (all governments have done that, and most big savers do not have these dollars in their own name but in LLCs etc). Even doing a blanqueo will have marginal success at this point (Macri was able to get quite some money in through that structure, but that was a different time and place with regards to the general outlook of the economy and political structure). It will be super interesting to see what happens
Don't underestimate things. As your article correctly pointed out, there are hundreds of billions of dollars and Macri DID have success bringing in BILLIONS of dollars with the last amnesty.
I just think you put more teeth into it. I could help him with this. Technology helps solve this. LLC or NO LLC there ARE ways to find this money.
Do your sleuthing to see how many BILLIONS came in last time. And that didn't have much teeth on it. Imagine Javier Milei puts his grit into it.
Plus, under a Milei government, you might even want wealthy locals to bring back funds to reinvest in businesses. I"m putting together a business plan for a revolutionary real estate portal to disrupt Zona Prop. I figure it would cost $10 MILLION dollars to perfect version 1. And I know many locals that told me they would invest $250,000 if Milei does an amnesty and can invest in a local business or real estate.
There seems to be a sizable portion of the libertarian bunch who are computer programmers by trade, and who believe that technology is the way to solve societal problems. It never is.
Plus, it is in the interest of owners and realtors to keep things opaque. I don't think that will change (even buyers are happy with this, because no one wants to have the real prices registered or visible anywhere for AFIP)
